How many Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos are there on the Swan Coastal Plain? To answer this riddle, Birds Australia WA (the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union) and the Department of Environment and Conservation are organising ‘The Great Cocky Count 2010’. This follows a similar count in 2006, when at least 4,500 of these enigmatic birds were found to inhabit the Swan Coastal Plain during the non-breeding season. Approximately 100 evening roosts that are used by Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos have now been identified, and Birds Australia will be attempting to survey each and every one of them on Wednesday 7 April. With so many sites to cover, Birds Australia is asking for assistance.
